Local & Plant-Based Food

Fresh and Local First - A Sustainable Approach

A plant-based approach doesn’t mean giving up everything you love, or even cutting out fish, meat, and dairy entirely. It’s about making small, impactful changes for both you and the planet, and it looks different for everyone. The key is focusing on local, fresh foods—less food miles equals less fuel, better flavours, and more nutrients. Go organic when possible, and explore local delicacies.

Why Choose Plant-Based Meals?

I’m often inspired by the unique foods I encounter while traveling and love recreating them at home—sometimes it’s as simple as using a new seasoning or trying a different cooking technique.

Remember it’s not about missing out, but embracing new possibilities. There are over 30,000 edible plant species on Earth – the  potential for diverse and sustainable food sources is vast.

When it comes to plant-based eating, freshness and locality matter—not just for our health, but for the planet too. Choosing fresh, locally grown food reduces carbon emissions, supports small farmers, and ensures we’re eating nutrient-rich, seasonal produce.

As travellers, embracing local food traditions allows us to connect with cultures in a more meaningful way. Whether it’s savouring tropical fruits at a farmers’ market or enjoying farm-to-table meals, prioritising local and seasonal ingredients is a simple yet powerful step toward sustainability.

The facts are that plant-based foods such as legumes, nuts and seeds and fermented foods such as tempeh have many health benefits, including improved heart health, better digestion, and reduced risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer. Rich in fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants, they help lower inflammation, boost immunity, and support healthy weight management. Plant-based diets also promote glowing skin, sustained energy levels, and a healthier gut.

Featured food: (Top) Club Mexicana serves the best vegan tacos and burritos in London, with three locations across the city. Their flavors are unbeatable! (Bottom left) During my seven-course tasting menu at Plates London, the standout for me was the mint ice cream paired with chewy beets, sweet pea, and kombu. In February 2025, this fully plant-based restaurant made history as the first vegan restaurant in the UK to receive a Michelin star!

Finally, in the bottom right, we have Surti Papdi Chaat from Namaste Village in Cambridge—an absolutely delicious dish. They also have locations in Norwich, Southend, and London. The restaurant is 100% vegetarian, offering plenty of vegan options, all prepared with traditional Indian standards.
