How Money Stays in the Local Community at Kasbah du Toubkal

Book Eco Hotels Verified – Impact Tier

Most hotels that call themselves eco will show you their solar panels. Kasbah du Toubkal will show you the ambulance they funded, the girls they put through university, and the mountain they help keep clean. There’s a difference between sustainability as aesthetics and sustainability as infrastructure. This is the latter.

Kasbah du Toubkal holds our Impact Tier status, awarded to hotels demonstrating direct, measurable community and environmental impact that goes beyond standard certification. And the credentials here are substantial. Solar-heated hot water, on-site electricity panels, a plastic-bottle-free water station, and organic produce sourced from local farms tick the environmental pillars. On the social equity side, 34 staff are employed directly from the village of Imlil – keeping families together and preventing rural depopulation – alongside over 100 local muleteers and freelance guides.

A 5% surcharge on every booking is passed directly to the Association des Bassins d’Imlil, a locally managed community fund that has financed ambulances, a communal hammam, waste management systems, and mountain clean-ups. The Kasbah also organises mountain waste clean-ups and operates within Toubkal National Park, actively supporting conservation and responsible land stewardship. As Condé Nast noted, it boasts some of the best rooftop views in North Africa – but it’s what happens behind the scenes that earns its place on Book Eco Hotels.

Kasbah du Toubkal: stay for a day, a week or more!

Epic Atlas hikes, rooftop yoga, and a stay that puts money directly into the local community. Here’s why this is more than just a hotel.

Perched above the Berber village of Imlil in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains, Kasbah du Toubkal is one of those rare places that makes you feel good about where you’ve chosen to spend your money. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Jbel Toubkal – North Africa’s highest peak – the Kasbah has been quietly redefining what responsible travel looks like since it first opened its doors.

Whether you’re after a day excursion from Marrakech, a week-long yoga retreat, or a base camp for serious trekking, this is a destination that delivers on every level – aesthetically, adventurously, and ethically.

The Stay: Atlas Views, Berber Hospitality

The Kasbah is a beautifully restored mountain lodge built in traditional Berber style – think arched doorways, hand-carved cedarwood, colourful Moroccan rugs, and terraces that look out over a sweeping valley of walnut trees and peaks. It’s the kind of place that earns its reputation through atmosphere alone.

Guests can stay overnight in the lodge itself or opt for a day excursion from Marrakech – just two hours away – which includes transport and a traditional Moroccan lunch. It’s an ideal introduction to the Atlas for those short on time but unwilling to compromise on experience.

More Than a Hotel: How Your Stay Funds Education

What truly sets Kasbah du Toubkal apart is its deep commitment to the community it calls home. The Kasbah is a co-founder of Education For All Morocco (EFAM), a charity established in 2007 that empowers girls from some of Morocco’s most underserved rural areas through access to education.

In remote High Atlas communities, distance and poverty keep many girls out of school entirely. EFAM addresses this by funding safe boarding houses close to secondary schools – giving girls from mountain villages the chance to continue their education without facing a daily journey that would otherwise be impossible.

The impact is real and measurable: 203 girls supported by EFAM have gone on to university. Around 500 girls are currently supported across the programme.

Every booking at Kasbah du Toubkal contributes to this work. The Kasbah operates on a model where tourism revenue stays local – staff are from the village, food is sourced nearby, and a portion of every stay supports EFAM directly. It is 100% local impact.

How to Experience It

There are several ways to visit, depending on your time and interests:

  • Day excursion from Marrakech – from €40pp, including transport and lunch. The perfect introduction to the Atlas without an overnight commitment.
  • Yoga retreats – the Kasbah runs regular retreat programmes in 2026, combining daily yoga practice with mountain walks and Moroccan cuisine. Set against the Atlas, it’s hard to imagine a more grounding setting.
  • Trekking & multi-day stays – for those wanting to explore Toubkal National Park, the Kasbah serves as an ideal base for guided hikes and multi-day Atlas routes.
